Basic Troubleshooting for Pagers

 E-mail

There is nothing worse than finding out your pager is not receiving and the place where you susbscribe for service is closed. You need your pager working now and you feel helpless. What can you do to remedy the problem yourself. There are a few basic pager troubleshooting tips you can do before you panic or throw the pager at the wall.

First of all the pager is a receiver so receiving a page depends upon battery strength. If you have had the battery sitting around in a drawer for a long time and don't have any idea how long it has been there or if had been used before then you cannot consider this a "new" battery. If you can see the time and date on the pager and believe that since you can see them that your battery is still good. That is also a false statement. To use an example with a car battery, you can turn on the lights and the radio but the car will not turn over that is because the battery does not have enough power in it left to work correctly. Same thing with a pager. Receiving strength depends entirely on the battery strength.

We hear alot of people say "How can my battery be bad when I hardly receive any pages?" Even though you may not receive alot of pages every time someone who is in the area is paged the paging terminal on the mountain in your area is sending out a page. The radio frequency is searching for the correct address (capcode) of the pager number it is looking for. This means it is scanning every pager circuit board in the area looking for the correct pager. While doing this it is using up battery strength. Once it finds the correct number magic happens You get a page!

Now that we have conquered placing a new battery in the pager. Give it a call and page the pager. Don't forget to press the pound (#) sign after you put the number in so the page will go through faster. If this still doesn't fix the problem we can try something else. It is called a hard reset. First if you have any numbers you need to save write them down because more than likely they will be erased. Then lets give it a try. This is not uncommon and is simple to do. Take out the battery and place it in backwards for about 15 seconds. This will reset the pager. You may feel a slight vibration through this process but do not be alarmed. Then after about 15 seconds or so take the battery out and place it in the correct way. Let the pager cycle through the startup phase. Then give it a page and see if it goes through. Most of the time this is a quick fix. If not call your provider.
